What is Timket (Epiphany)? It is one of the most important, colorful, and joyous festivals in Ethiopia. While Epiphany in Western churches often commemorates the visit of the Magi (the revelation of Jesus to the Gentiles), in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Timket specifically celebrates the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. It is a public holiday that takes place annually on Tir 11 in the Ethiopian calendar, which corresponds to January 19 (or January 20 during a Leap Year in the Gregorian calendar).
